Using one sound machine across naps, outings and bedtime
A sound machine that never leaves the nursery only solves half the problem, since babies nap in cars, at relatives' houses, and in prams just as often as they do at home. Here's how to actually use one machine across all of it.
Keep the same sound everywhere, not just at home
The value of a portable machine isn't really its portability, it's consistency. If your baby falls asleep at home to steady white noise, use exactly that sound, at roughly the same volume, wherever the nap happens. Switching to a different sound "because it's just a quick nap in the car" undermines the one thing a familiar sound is supposed to provide.
Clip it somewhere it will actually stay
A clip is only useful if it's attached somewhere secure and at a sensible distance, close enough that the sound is clearly audible, far enough that it isn't jostling against your baby's head on a bumpy pram ride. Test the clip position at home before relying on it during an outing, so you're not adjusting it one-handed in a car park.
Charge on a schedule, not when it's already low
With around 12 hours of battery, a machine like this comfortably covers a full day of naps plus an overnight stretch, but it's worth charging it on a routine, overnight while you sleep, say, rather than waiting until you notice it's running low right before you need it for an outing.
Let the glow-in-the-dark buttons do their job
The glow-in-the-dark feature works best if the machine has had some daylight exposure during the day, so avoid keeping it permanently in a dark bag or drawer if you can help it. A few hours of ambient light is enough to charge the glow for a full night's worth of easy, lamp-free adjustments.
